"In the verie harte of Malverne Chase" was how John Hornyold, in the 16th century, described the Worcestershire village of Hanley Castle. In his day it was the seat of administration of the harsh forest laws that governed the Chase; its castle, of which nothing now remains, was a hive of activity; its potteries & a quay on the Severn gave it a flourishing commercial life; it sheltered a sizeable Catholic community at a time when to be Catholic was to court disaster; & its school was already old-established, & with a history traceable for over 500 years, it is now one of the oldest in the country.

In this thoroughly researched book the author brings that past vividly back to life; & in a way that gives insight into village life throughout England, for she has succeeded in using Hanley Castle to illustrate national trends & developments.

The dust jacket spine is faded, & the top edges are a little rubbed through wear. The cover also appears to be price clipped. Otherwise book is in a lovely condition.

There is a neat Author Signature on the Title Page.
